I love soft pretzels. I don’t know how many times my brother and sister and I begged my mom to buy us pretzels from the Pretzelmaker in the mall! If I didn’t know any better, I’d say we grew up on them. And what’s better than mini personal-sized pretzels with these pretzel bites? {Umm, nothing.}
This is my family’s favorite recipe that we have been making for years! It’s so good!
Pretzel Bites
Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp. butter
- 1-1/3 cup warm water
- 1 pkg 2-1/4 tsp. yeast
- 1 Tbsp. granulated sugar
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 3-1/4 cup flour
- 3 Tbsp. salted butter
- 2 Tbsp. coarse salt
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit.
-
Grease a baking sheet with the butter.
-
In a small bowl, add the yeast to your water and let sit for five minutes, until foamy.
-
Add sugar and salt to yeast and stir well.
-
Combine yeast mixture and 3 cups flour until completely mixed. {At this point, it may still be a little sticky. That's just fine.}
-
Knead in the extra 1/4 cup of flour until your dough is smooth and elastic.
-
Rip the dough and form one inch balls.
-
Melt your butter in a small bowl and roll the dough balls in it. {Lather 'em up nice and good!}
-
Sprinkle with salt.
-
Bake for 9-11 minutes.
-
Eat warm and enjoy!
These can easily be made into full-size pretzels if you want. Instead of ripping into balls, divide it into 12 equal parts, rolls each ball into a thin, long strip, and twist into a pretzel. Then use a pastry brush to butter it and sprinkle the salt on top. Easy peasy, folks! Enjoy!

Oh man, I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE soft pretzels, but I shy away anytime I see a recipe that uses yeast. You make it sound pretty easy, though. I should bite the bullet and go for it GI Joe. They look awesome. Coming over from Nifty Thrifty Sunday.

I have always read that hot water kills the yeast and to use lukewarm temp water to avoid this. I don’t know how true that is…just thought I would mention it.

I have always read that you should use lukewam water and not hot water because it kills the yeast. I’m not sure how true that is…just thought it was worth mentioning. Maybe somebody else could elaborate on this?

Hi Sarah,
Thanks for the recipe, it sounds so simple to make but I’m sure it’s delicious! I’m going to use butter instead of vegetable shortening but I’m sure it won’t affect anything.
